On July 18 1998 James Stevens was shot and died from bleeding to death while his wife hurried to hide evidence. He was found in the passenger side of his car on the floor board with his face down on the seat. After his wife had dragged his body to the car and fled the crime scene "Neighbors said ". In fact the neighbors are the ones who heard the gun shot and then saw her dragging the body to the car and they called 911. In her first statement to the
police she said Her husband had been drinking, she said, and had assaulted
her. When she ran out of the room, he apparently tried to tuck the gun
into his waistband and fired it into his leg by mistake. She also said
she helped her husband to the car to drive him to a hospital more than
40 miles away, but in her anxiety and haste lost control of the car and
crashed into a telephone pole on Mountain Pine Road. Then she claims she
was following her husband's instructions when she tried to drive him to
a hospital.
